My daughter has been attending The Social skllls group therapy sessions since she was two and a half years old.She is now eight. She was very timid, unresponsive to greetings, uncooperative and adamant. She could not make any friends as her speech was limited.
She has come a long way . The group sessions helped her in more ways than one.In a play method she learntthe following skills which were absent :
- Turn taking
- Waiting patiently without fidgeting
- Getting along with peers
- Playing simple outdoor as well as indoor games
- Behaving appropriately in public places.
- Shopping for her own snacks
- Sharing
- Answering phone.
- Completing assigned work.
And many more subtle changes have been felt by us in the last 5 years.Presently Dr Reena and Dr Harish are working on the conversational skills and visualisation aspects.
The sincere efforts of the team is benifitting my daughter in a big way and I hope she will overcome her shortcomings very soon.
I suggest every child with social skills deficit should attend the Group session at least once a week .
- Karan was diagnosed high functioning autistic by Dr.Udani when he was 2.6yrs. of age. After a series of therapies, which included speech, vitamins, diet, behaviour which did not seem to make any difference at all in karan's condition, but left me more exhausted I met a counsellor who ran a special school and believed that children learned and grew better in a normal set up and running around for different therapies did not help at all. This made lot of sense to me.Initially Karan was fine there, gradually he started developing lot of behaviour problems like hitting himself, removing his clothes, throwing tantrum all the time, would not sleep for nights together and remained irritated all the time. For a year I remained in school with Karan hoping for him to settle down, then tried sending him for just an hour during which he just remained in the corridor.Nothing at all seemed to be working.
Then at somebody's reference we took him for behaviour therapy to a well known centre. After just two sessions I got a call from them to first settle him down with medication and only then will they be able to work upon him.Already with the school where he went for 7 yrs. having given up on him,it seemed like the end of the world to me.
My school friend who is a paediatrician herself used to bring her son to Khushi asked me to meet Reena. When I first met her Karan was already 11yrs.old and the NOBODY knew how to manage him.I was half expecting her to tell me that it was too late but nothing of that sort happened. In the first session itself Karan kept the book in the cupboard when she asked him to do so and closed the cupboard slowly when he was told.I had seen him listening to somebody after a very very long time.
When I was expecting to be told how difficilt it is to manage Karan I vividly remember Reena telling Harish "He understands everything,he is just a bit stubborn we work on it and he will be fine".AND SINCE THEN by God's grace there has been no looking back.
I remember calling up Reena and my husband when Karan smiled at me,I remember my brother coming for a session just to see how a delicate looking girl that Reena is,can make Karan listen to her without as much as raising her voice,I remember Chaitali Doctor writing in his book NO TANTRUM AT ALL:-),I remember Karan wanting to go away from navratri party and Harish talking to him and then Karan was happy and settled till the end of the party.I can go on and on with incidents that touched my heart.
We have come a very long way since then and there is a long long way to go.Just the knowledge that we are on the right path is the greatest motivator.God has been kind and the number of times I am able to say "touch wood" is increasing by the day,so much so that Abhijit has suggested that I carry a stick with me to avoid discomfort and "touch wood" for that too.........
- We had a very difficult time in accepting that our 2 year old son, Devharsh is autistic. We had never heard about this disorder before and it hit us quite hard.
The knowledge about the problem made things even more difficult in the following year. Devharsh's hyperactivity, therapy and home program was difficult to adjust to and progress was very slow.
We met Dr. Reena Singh a year ago as a specialist for this disorder. What helped more than anything after meeting her was that she helped us cope and overcome our "mental demons". Like other therapists, she did not give us any anxiety or left us confused. It was not that there was any special psychiatric advice given to fight the stress but her perseverance and caring attitude towards Dev was what made the difference. Dev accepted her instantly and though cried a lot throughout the sessions also complied with her. The work became more enjoyable to him and us. We learned to teach him while playing and accepting him and his ways as normal. The energy spent in trying to fix the behavior is now backed by understanding why the behavior happens. And since we understand and we respond appropriately, we get him to conform better. Our child is truly extraordinary and we merely are helping him like all other parents to get him to do things to the best of his abilities.
- I am the mother of a seven year old autistic boy, Aadi. Aadi was diagnosed at two and a half years and since then he has been going to Reena Singh for speech and occupational therapy since then. Besides being a good therapist, Reena is also very dedicated to her work, very organized in her approach and she also keeps her knowledge updated from time to time. Above all, she is a very nice and friendly person who loves children. I wish her all the best.
- We were very depressed after our only child of diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This happened after we consulted some doctors at Mumbai when our child was not speaking up to 3 years of age and not interacting socially in proper manner. We felt that our world is lost and no hope for us anywhere. We thought that we must give a try and started scouting for professionals who can help us. Then we met Dr. Reena Singh who is an occupational therapist through reference of Dr. Vibha Krishna Murthy. The first thing Reena did was to motivate us that all is not lost and things can improve if we work properly and work hard. She gave a lot of case references to motivate us in the first meeting. We thought that in any case we don't have any thing to loose so let's give it a try and started to go to her for therapy. It started with twice a week and we could see dramatic improvements in first two-three months. Then it became once a week and latter on once in fifteen day. We went through the treatment for almost one year and let me tell you all that people even don't notice his autistic behavior in spite of lots of interactions. He speaks properly, interacts with his friends in normal manner, behaves properly in school and does well too. This journey of 10% Normal to 95% normal for our son would not have been possible without Dr. Reena's support and professional help. Though a lot of credit to the mother also as she worked very hard on follow ups and home schedules suggested by Dr. Reena. Lastly would like to say to all parents that don't loose hope as anything is possible with right professional advice and support and sincere hard work.
