Visual Perceptual Training
Visual perception means perceiving the visual stimuli, understanding and then giving appropriate responses. It includes the following areas:-
- Visual closure: Here the person is able to perceive part/parts as whole.
For e.g.
These dots above are perceived to be a line.
- Visual memory: Here the person is able to visually remember the sequence, object or task in absence of stimuli.
- Visual Scanning: Here the person is able to scan or search and target the desired objects.
- Visual discrimination: Here the person is able to differentiate between the objects or items visually by their function or feature and place the right object at right target.
- Figure ground perception: Here the person is able to differentiate between foreground and background. For eg.picking up white peg or block from white background.
Thus in visual perception training the child is treated for the problems in above mentioned areas. The activity or task is selected accordingly to tap their particular visual potential. The activity is graded once the child has learnt the previous pattern of visual functioning. Once the child is independent performing the task with the table top activity, the child is then subject to environmental task tapping the same visual potential. For e.g. matching same on the table top with blocks will move to matching same in the house, in their cupboard, in the kitchen etc.
